Beijing Institute of Geological Engineering(BIGE), as well as Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology Team of Beijing, was established in 1955, as the first groundwater-resource exploration team sponsored by the former Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources aimed at water-supply in the capital, meanwhile the only professional team accredited by Beijing Municipality to carry out survey, monitoring, and evaluation of groundwater as well as development, usage and planning of the resource. BIGE is a national owned enterprise with independent corporate capacity. There are nearly a thousand staff among which three hundred and fifty (350) are engineers or senior engineers, and over four hundred advanced sets of equipment were made in or outside the country.
　　BIGE has been awarded totally fifteen certificates, such as Grade A Certificate for Engineering Prospecting (Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology, Survey, Engineering Exploration, Geotechnical Engineering), Grade A Certificate for Geological prospecting, Grade A Certificate for Prevention and Control of Geological Hazard(Exploration, Design, Construction, supervision), Grade A Certificate for Engineering Consultation, Grade B Certificate for Environmental Assessment etc. BIGE also took the lead passed ISO9001 quality system authentication.
　　In Beijing, over several decades BIGE has accomplished more than ten thousand production-wells, including 95% exploration, design and engineering in waterworks and 80% production-wells in enterprises and administrations. BIGE has also extended the service outside China in seven countries of Asia, Africa and South America. Projects about water supply, exploration and drilling have been undertaken by BIGE though international bidding or economic assistance of Chinese government.
　　In the field of geothermal exploration and development, BIGE has been carrying out survey and research. Four geothermal zones and ten geothermal fields have been determined. Over 200 geothermal wells have been completed with the maximum temperature 89oC.
　　In the field of geotechnical engineering construction, BIGE has jointed the market since the early 1980's, and carried on the geotechnical engineering design and construction in tunnels and foundations. Especially for groundwater lowering at project site, BIGE owns abundant experiences and technical power. There have been over a thousand such projects completed by BIGE, and over 90% of them reached excellent degree.
　　Many prizes have been awarded to BIGE, such as "Momentous Contribution Team on Geological Mining" by the former Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources in 1980, "National Model Unit in International Assistance Project" in 1987, "National Outstanding Unit on Geological Prospecting" by the former Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Personnel, National Planning Committee and China Trade Union in 1991, "Capital Civilized Model" in five consecutive years from 1997 to 2001, and the special honor of "National Labor Diploma on May 1st" in 2002.
